I have a 250gig Seagate from Fry's last x'mas when they had massive sales - i got mine for $175! If you can wait until around the holidays, that'll be a good time to get one. I like Seagate & La Cie - just whatever you do, do NOT get a Maxtor. Massive HD failures are pretty common. I have more than 2 friends who have lost everything because they bought Maxtors.
We have a 60gb WD passport.. but it just died this weekend. I think it was dropped. =( At least there's a warranty and we have extra backups.
i have a maxtor but maxed it out recently with photography stuff. we bought another external hd at costco (not portable i don't think) but it's cute and white and set up on a network so we can share it and um, has a lit blue circle on it.

can you tell i have no idea what i'm talking about?

thanks for your recs, all! i'll look around some more. i wanted a portable hd mostly bc i'm lazy. good to know about maxtor - are you reading this, s?

i recommend this one as well (it's gosh darn cute!), but not as portable.
LOL @ kinsiekins comments. i wanted to chime in on maxtor....i hate it. 'nuff said. their interface sucks and it makes my computer crash! i'm getting a new one this weekend. thanks for the info girls.....just in the nick of time. ;)
now i dunno about portable extrnal drives, but THIS is the most shmexxy external drive i have ever seen...
Sarah, not sure if you saw my comment after yours, but I'd move data off that maxtor drive ASAP...
i just got a 500g external for under $200 so i can use it between my MacPro & MacBook. I got it from the academicsuperstore.com.
geek talk is so sexy. i love it.
A topic right up my alley!

• Ditto with the Maxtors. I like a nice Lacie myself, though most models require an external power source.
• Remember, ALL hard drives will fail eventually.
• Have you considered backing up to DVD? I like burning to DVDs because they offer a few advantages over external hard drives.
1. They are permanent. No "accidentally" overwriting on the DVD.
2. They can be left off property. I know of several instances when a computer went up in smoke or was burglarized. Where was the back up external hard drive, you ask? Right next to it, so that was gone as well.

DVDs can be put in a safety deposit box or family members home. NOW that's protected data. Your MacBook can probably burn a DVD-DL. About 9 GB per disc.
